From School to Sixth Form
When you move from primary school to senior school a lot of things change. You no longer have just one teacher for every subject. You’ll move from classroom to classroom for different lessons and you may even be with different pupils in different classes. You’re also given more independence than you are at primary school. When you move to sixth form however things change even more so! There is even more independence and a lot of your work is dependant on how much time you choose to spend on it so dedication is key.
Moving To A Sixth Form College
You may decide the best thing for you is to move to a sixth form college rather than stay on at your senior school. It could be that your school does not even have a sixth form. Moving to a college involves a lot of change. You won’t have to wear a uniform and you’ll be meeting a lot of new people. You can even choose a course that is much more focused on practical learning than many academic subjects. If you move to a sixth form college to study try not to get too swayed by the freedom you have. You won’t have the same teachers as before and they may not be aware of your abilities or how much you need pushing. You have to take responsibility for you own work so try to keep focused on what you’re doing despite whatever else is going on.
Staying On At School For Sixth Form
If you choose to stay at school for sixth form you will still have much more freedom than you did before. One of the big elements of freedom is the chance to choose what you study. You may not want to think too far ahead but what you study at sixth form will determine what you study at university. Have a think about what you want to do as a career when your education years are over. Don’t be swayed by what your friends are studying. It won’t be important when it comes to getting into university. Think about what you want to be before you make a decision.
Dedication, Dedication, Dedication
The big difference between sixth form and high school is in sixth form you are very much left to your own devices. You are not made to do your home work as much as you are in high school, the teachers expect you to do it because it is to your own advantage but if you choose not to so be it. However it is crucial that you show dedication because if you do not work hard then you are only hurting yourself. Your grades will be what get you onto the course of your choice at university so if you mess around at school it could be detrimental to your future career.
Earning While You Learn
If you choose to stay on at sixth form whether in school or at college you could be able to earn some money. Depending on personal circumstances the government offer EMAs or Education Maintenance Allowances to help fund your learning. You could receive up to £30 a week.
