All About Abortion

Abortion is a contentious issue, and often the emotions that surround it obscure the facts. Today, abortion is a safe way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy but not everyone understands the details. Finding out the answers to frequently asked questions about abortion will help you make an informed decision whenever you need to.

What is an Abortion?

An abortion is a medical procedure to terminate a pregnancy. There are several types of abortions, and the method used depends upon the length of the pregnancy. These methods include:

  • Early medical abortion (up to nine weeks). This method involves taking two tablets, one two days after the other, and together they will induce cramping that will result in the uterus breaking down and the embryo being flushed out. This may also be called medical abortion or using the abortion pill.
  • Vacuum aspiration abortion (five to fifteen weeks). This method involves a tube being inserted into the vagina and using suction to remove the embryo from the uterus. This is sometimes also called the suction method.
  • Dilation and evacuation (fifteen to nineteen weeks). This method involves stretching the cervix open with forceps and using suction to remove the embryo from the uterus. This may also be called D&E and be considered the suction method.
  • Late Abortion (twenty to twenty four weeks). At this stage there are two options. 1 - surgical two stage abortion, which is carried out over two days or 2- medically induced abortion, both options require an overnight stay in hospital. More information about late abortion can be found on the NHS website www.nhs.uk

Are All Abortions Legal in the UK?

Abortion is legal in England, Scotland and Wales up until the 24th week of a pregnancy. The methods described above are all legal as long as two doctors agree that to continue the pregnancy would harm the woman's physical or mental health, or that of her children. Abortion is not legal at all in Northern Ireland.

Are Abortions Carried Out in Hospital?

Abortions are not always carried out in hospital. During early medical abortions the tablets are administered at a hospital or clinic, but most women return home afterwards. Vacuum aspirations and D&Es may also take place in a hospital or specialised and approved clinic as a day procedure, however if they involve local or general anaesthetic the stay may be longer or overnight.

How Much Does an Abortion Cost?

An abortion can be free on the NHS if a doctor refers a woman and the woman attends a consultation at a clinic. There is usually a two to four week waiting list for abortions on the NHS, so women must act quickly. Women may also choose to use a private clinic where fees may be anything from £450 up to £1770 (the price depending on how many weeks pregnant you are and the type of procedure you require). These clinics usually offer payment plans to clients who need them.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Are there Laws about Teenagers Having Abortions?

Young women under the age of 16 may seek abortion information without parental consent. A young woman under the age of 16 may also have an abortion without parental consent if her doctors determine that she meets the Fraser Guidelines:

  • She understands the medical professional's advice.
  • She can not be persuaded to inform her parents.
  • She is competent to give consent to the treatment.
  • It is in her best interest not to inform her parents.

Can Doctors Refuse to Refer a Woman for an Abortion?

Yes. A doctor may refuse to refer a woman for an abortion if (s)he believes that abortion is wrong in all circumstances. According to the law, however, these doctors must make their views known in their clinic literature and they must make alternative health care arrangements for their patients who request it.

Is Having an Abortion a Risk to a Woman's Health?

Your doctors will give you further information about the risks associated with having an abortion, but for the most part they are minimal. The later an abortion occurs in a pregnancy the greater the chances of a complication, but only rarely do women experience:

  • Excessive bleeding.
  • Damage to the cervix or womb.
  • Post-abortion infection that brings with it fever, discharge, bleeding or abdominal pain.

Abortions are safe, legal medical procedures in England, Scotland and Wales, though simply because they are legal does not mean they should be treated lightly. If you are considering having an abortion, seek confidential medical advice from your GP or local clinic, and they will refer you as needed.

No matter how you feel about your pregnancy, remember that health professionals will help you decide what is best for you.

Can a mother tell her 15 year old daughter to terminate her pregnancy under UK law? I see a 15 year old as a minor so surely that should be the parent's choice in this matter, not the minor's.

Hi, my girlfriend is late on her period and thinks she’s pregnant. In England can she go to the doctors or abortion clinic without her parents finding out? Thank you
Dindin 10/06/2019 at 6:00 pm
I’m 14.my boyfriend is 17. We had an abortion last year and everything went smoothly but now I’m pregnant again (possibly 3months counting from my last period)and I just want to get rid of this baby I’m desperate please help me. I don’t want to get him in trouble and I don’t want my parents finding out. Me and my parents have only just started having some sort of relationship and I just can’t ruin that . I can’t hurt anymore people including myself. I’m having really bad pains in my stomach, uterus and back and feeling sort of dizzy at times. I’ve been searching a lot of things up on the web and just over thinking very unhealthy and stressing myself and torturing myself basically. Please tell me that I can have an abortion without my parents finding out and that there’s not a possibility of danger in my situation regarding my physical health. Please return my comment asap.
Thank you

hello! I am a priest. I am afraid I have gotten a nun pregnant (whoops) I am ashamed of my sins but I believe that the lord will forgive me. the nun seems to have an sti although I am unsure how as she is a nun and shouldn't be fooling around(I am aware I did the same) I am apologising but not for her. what do I do to help this itchiness in my crotch area?
TeenIssues Editor 17/08/2018 at 10:42 am
Much depends upon how many weeks she is. If the pregnancy is early days, then You would be able to her to accompany your sister to see your GP in confidence.
Ward1996 16/08/2018 at 9:56 pm
My 14 year old sister might be pregnant and I'm providing a pregnancy test for her. If she is pregnant could I take her for an abortion if that's the choice she makes.
TeenIssues Editor 09/08/2018 at 12:48 pm
You cannot rely upon the chances of you miscarrying. I suggest you have a pregnancy test first and if you are pregnant visit your GP asap in order to explore your options.
Jadey010 07/08/2018 at 4:41 pm
Hi. So I'm 17. And I've been pregnant before when i was 15, but suffered from a miscarriage. I think i may be pregnant again. What are the chances of having a miscarriage again. I'm also unsure of I should abort as my boyfriend is quite a bit older than me. Not only thatg but I've just left school and I'm scared it will mess with the rest of my life. What are my chances of having yet another miscarriage and would it be worth looking into abortion?

I am 14 and my period is 3 days late, I think there’s a chance I’m pregnant, if I am, how can I get an abortion without my parents knowing?
BoiBoiBoi 01/07/2018 at 11:51 pm
I’m pregnant. I can’t speak to my GP, because I don’t know who it is. I can’t tell my parents know. Can I go to an abortion clinic and request the pills. I can’t stay overnight in hospital. I’m 17 and well- the baby was a “rape-baby.”

What can I do.
TeenIssues Editor 22/06/2018 at 2:36 pm
You would need to speak to your GP directly regarding this matter. It is important that you do.
pregoandinadilema 22/06/2018 at 11:21 am
Hey sisters,
I am a transgender and I'm pregnant but I've already taken my estrogen (my transition tablets) but I haven't yet had the surgery, will this effect my baby in anyway?
TeenIssues Editor 14/05/2018 at 3:35 pm
You do not need to have an adult with you if you go to your GP to request an abortion. If you personally feel you wish to have someone with you, you can.
Anonymous 13/05/2018 at 11:58 pm
I found out I'm pregnant only by 5 or 6 weeks, I'm 16 years old and I'm wondering if I need an adult to accompany me when I go for my abortion? If I do does it have to be a family member or can it be a friend?
Aar 25/04/2018 at 10:28 pm
Hi asking for a friend she is 15 and is scared that she could be pregnant her period is a week late and a test has came up positive her parents are very strict and will not tell them and her gp is a relation
sarah 24/04/2018 at 1:49 am
I think I am pregnant and I wanna have an abortion. My parents are really strict, I don't want my parents to know and the gp I go to, my doctor is really close to my mother what should I do?
TeenIssues Editor 23/04/2018 at 2:52 pm
Before your girlfriend thinks about terminating her pregnancy, it would be wise to find out first and foremeost if she is pregnant by doing a pregnancy test. You can see more which

Steph 06/04/2018 at 1:41 pm
Sorry another thing I’m also adding is that I had light red patches in my knickers this morning isn’t this a sign? I’m not supposed to be on my period for another 2 weeks
Lol 06/04/2018 at 7:59 am
Carrying on from my previous comment, I was sick three more times yesterday, however I’m starting to feel better today and I haven’t been sick since 4pm yesterday. I have got spotting though but this is around the time I would have my period and I’ve not long started the pill. Do you think I’m pregnant?
Alo- 04/04/2018 at 1:10 am
I am 15 years old and I’m 6 weeks pregnant, yes I realize how young I a, and my parents think it’s best for me to have an Abortion but it’s up to me ,I know a baby will ruin my life ,but thinking about basically killing my own baby hurts me so bad I can’t srop crying ... what do I do?
TeenIssues Editor 20/03/2018 at 12:25 pm
You can buy the morning after pill from your local pharmacy over the counter. You can book an appointment to see your GP directly with your GP at your doctor's surgery or over the phone.
Felicia 20/03/2018 at 12:43 am
I just wanna know how you book an appointment for an abortion at the doctors and how you get the morning after pill from your doctors or pharmacy
TeenIssues Editor 05/03/2018 at 10:04 am
You can become pregnant from the withdrawal method - it is not reliable form of contraception.
Leah 04/03/2018 at 10:43 am
I forgot to say that we did it twice the first time it was no protection but he pulled out way before he ejaculated and the second time it started without but stopped and he put a condom on. - but I don’t know about pre cum.We love each other and I trust him because I don’t shut up about it so I know he is there for me. We both don’t want a baby yet as we are too young and we both know we are stupid and we regret even having intercorse
TeenIssues Editor 05/02/2018 at 11:48 am
It sounds as though you need to have a proper pregnancy test. I suggest you to visit your GP. You would not have to gain your parent's permission and it is unlikely your GP will deny you treatment.

Ash88 Editor 30/11/2017 at 3:36 pm
@Ella - your system could be all over the place. If you had a bleed in November - you should be OK. Quite often after the morning after pill, your system is out of sync. I'd wait until mid-December. I'm sure after that amount of hormones you should be fine.
Ella 28/11/2017 at 9:01 pm
Also, I’ve been feeling sick after eating and experiencing mild cramps but no bleeding. I have also had a lot of clear/white sticky discharge and I do not know if it is normal; people are telling me that it is. I am 16 and I know that if I got pregnant at this age I will have a termination due to a bad fininacial issue and I’m too young to be a mother. Thankyou.
TeenIssues Editor 17/11/2017 at 2:22 pm
Any woman who has an abortion, whatever age she is, has a right for that information to remain confidential

It is unlikely the doctor would deny you an abortion pill, unless you live in the Republic of Ireland where abortion is illegal.

Regardless of whether your GP is a family friend, your GP has to keep the matter confidential if you request this. There are other alternatives also

As a patient, you have the same rights to confidentiality as an adult. Your doctor, nurse or pharmacist won't tell your parents, or anyone else, as long as they believe that you fully understand the information and decisions involved.

I'm almost 17 and my BFF and I rolled around on the bed together; him in his boxers and me in my jeans. We did this for hours. Now I'm not sure if I'm pregnant. I'm getting the symptoms of early pregnancy, like constipation, cramping, bloating and feeling sick. Could I be pregnant? Coz the chances of getting pregnant this way are pretty slim. What should I do??
Alana 10/02/2017 at 8:15 pm
Does an adult have to come with me to the clinic or can I go alone when speaking about an abortion and actually having one?
TeenIssues Editor 26/01/2017 at 2:23 pm
As specified in the article; young women under the age of 16 may seek abortion information without parental consent. A young woman under the age of 16 may also have an abortion without parental consent if her doctors determine that she meets the Fraser Guidelines: She understands the medical professional's advice. She can not be persuaded to inform her parents. She is competent to give consent to the treatment. It is in her best interest not to inform her parents. Therefore, I suggest you seek advice from your doctor asap - please also I hope this helps.

TeenIssues Editor 03/01/2017 at 2:07 pm
Termination in Northern Ireland is only allowed where a woman's life or long-term health is put at serious risk. It means the majority of girls and women who choose the option of abortion must travel to England or other European countries to obtain a non-NHS abortion. The FPA pregnancy choices counselling service is the only impartial, non-judgemental and non-directive service available in Northern Ireland. Whether you are thinking about continuing with your pregnancy, or considering abortion or adoption, the counsellor will take you through the practical aspects of each choice and provide helpful information. Please see FPA whichI hope this helps.

I'm 14 and might be pregnant. I've had some symptoms but if I am, can I have an abortion on the NHS without telling my doctor or parents? I cant risk anyone finding out
TeenIssues Editor 09/12/2016 at 10:54 am
In early pregnancy you may be prescribed the abortion pill, please see NHS link here which gives further advice on both medical and surgical abortion options, the process and who to contact to get help. We cannot advise you whether you should keep your baby or not, if you are undecided you can ask for counselling in order to help you make the decision. I hope this helps.

Hi I'm 16 and took 3 pregnancy strip tests and they a
L showed positive I've been having cramps and I think I'm 2-3 weeks
My boyfriend wants me to have an abortion and says im to young
I only have a weekend job and I'm in college so I won't have time for a baby if I asked at the clinic for an abortion what is the likely ness that I'll have one. And is an abortion the best for me ? Should I keep the baby or not?
TeenIssues Editor 05/12/2016 at 2:34 pm
You will not be refused an abortion, unless you live in Northern Ireland. I suggest you do a pregnancy test first and if it is positive visit your GP.

Condom split, a week late for period, breasts extrmely sore. If I am pregnant can I get an abortion? In college studdying engineering and welding.Am not ready for a child, dont want one at all. Will I be refused an abortion?
TeenIssues Editor 08/11/2016 at 12:29 pm
You really need to go and visit your GP to discuss your options. Your GP will keep the discussion private and confidential.

Sarah 04/11/2016 at 8:10 pm
@flower I completely understand where you are coming from! It's emotionally super hard! But think about it this way: I also know of mothers who have aborted their children, and they regret it everyday. Some of them have dreams of their babies, and they never forget about it because as you said, during the pregnancy you get very attached to your child. Your mother's decision was hard to make, but I don't think she would regret giving life to her child. It is so honorable because she did what was best for her baby. I have so much respect for her!
Flower Editor 02/11/2016 at 3:15 pm
@Sarah - yes but my mum had to adopt a child before she met my dad and had me and my sister and she said it was the hardest thing she has ever done. She said she still thinks about my brother every birthday and I once caught her crying on my brother's birthday. He would be 28 now we all think and talk about him a lot and what he would be doing so it not always the best option because you have to carry the baby for nine months give birth get attached and give the baby away. I'm just glad our mum told us as she's always said we have another brother somewhere out there. Jess.
Sarah 02/11/2016 at 5:06 am
This webpage is a little disturbing to me as it basically sugarcoats abortion. It says abortion is "terminating a pregnancy" which means killing the baby. During an abortion the baby does feel pain! We have to speak up for innocent children who have no say of what happens to them. Did you know that numerous famous people including Justin Bieber were almost aborted? What if we aborted a child who was destined to find the cure for cancer? Ladies, be strong; there are other options! There are so many people who would be willing to adopt your baby! It's the best option for you AND your baby. Because, despite what they may tell you, there are dangerous risks that come with these procedures that harm your bodies.
Jim jim 03/10/2016 at 9:32 pm
I do hope that this is not true Lisa. Please tell me one of your friends have posted this for you. I am very disappointed in you and if I find out that this is true, you will be getting a spanking!!!

I'm turning 16. I lost my virginity a week ago with my boyfriend. We didn't use a condom as we only put it in for less than a minute. He didn't come but we were scared after that. We used condoms after that too. Now, I'm bleeding but I'm not sure if it's my period as its stickier than usual and it looks like a pus with blood ! I'm really scared that I might be pregnant and I really don't know what to do! If my parent knows, they would kill both of us!
Db 06/09/2016 at 12:03 am
I'm 15 and I've recently just lost my virginity while being on my period. We used protection but when he pulled out we saw the condom what not still on the penis, he didn't come inside of my but there was precum. It was on the 3rd it's now the 6th but I'm really scared, if I am pregnant what do I do? I can't speak to parents as they will disown me. I don't feel any different but I don't know when you start to feel symptoms? When can I use a pregnancy test? And do my parents have to find out if I want an abortion?
Jules1999 02/09/2016 at 1:50 pm
@Jwj - try the Brook Advisory Centre, they will help at least point you in the right direction.
Jwj 01/09/2016 at 7:41 pm
What if i cant go to my gp about my teen pregnancy and termination? Is there anywhere else i can go??
TeenIssues Editor 12/08/2016 at 2:50 pm
Please see Brook link here if you need to speak to someone for advice. Your GP will not judge you and will keep the matter confidential. You do not have to tell the receptionist what your appointment is for, you only have to request an appointment. Many GP services have automated telephone booking services which may mean you wont have to speak to anyone directly. The most important thing is to seek advice and help in order to put your mind at rest. The sooner you do this, the better in order to explore your options. An abortion pill may also be available if you are early in your pregnancy, please see BPAS which

I've found out I'm pregnant and I'm getting referred to bpas. I'm only 15 years old and I really want an abortion due to the fact I'm not stable enough to have a baby and I don't want it to interfere with my education. How long after my first appointment can I get refered to a hospital for the first tablet for a medical termination?
TeenIssues Editor 29/07/2016 at 12:56 pm
Unless you live in Ireland where abortion is illegal unless it occurs as the result of a medical intervention performed to save the life of the mother, then you are entitled to have a termination anytime up to 24 weeks of your pregnancy. If you need help in this area I advise you to make an appointment with your GP.

Currently five-six weeks pregnant and my fiancé wants me to have an abortion, I have suffered from manic depression in the past which is why I think he wants me too. I don't want an abortion and I feel like he's almost forcing me too. what do I do should I continue with this pregnancy like I want to or do what he wants and regret it?
TeenIssues Editor 07/06/2016 at 12:31 pm
You would have to take a pregnancy test if you had unprotected sex 'after' you had taken the morning after pill.
M 06/06/2016 at 4:24 pm
I had sex on 13.05 but took the morning after pill the next day. 7 days later I had unprotected sex again, but he pulled out both times. The same day I had sex for the second time I encountered light bleeding, which was a different colour. Is it likely I'm pregnant as now I'm 3 days late on my period?
TeenIssues Editor 06/06/2016 at 2:05 pm
It is highly unlikely that your girlfriend would have become pregnant this way. However, if you are contemplating taking things further, then I suggest you and/or she takes proper contraceptive precautions.
Kat 03/06/2016 at 11:43 am
I'm not sure yet if I am pregnant or not as I haven't gotten a test yet but if say I was would I have to get parental consent to have an abortion as I am 17 years old?
TeenIssues Editor 20/05/2016 at 2:19 pm
Your girlfriend is under age therefore you could face prosecution as this is considered illegal. I suggest your girlfriend carries out a pregnancy test to ensure she is not pregnant (if you have not ejaculated into her then the risk is much less). However, I would re-consider your actions regarding sleeping with your girlfriend from now on as you could find yourself in trouble.
Lbfifn 19/05/2016 at 11:41 pm
Im 16 and my girlfriends 14, we regularly do stuff and i have not came inside her to my knowing but she is showing pregnancy signs.. She says her mum would report me to the police if she found out we did anything what would happen to me?
TeenIssues Editor 12/05/2016 at 11:46 am
You did the right thing by taking the morning after pill once you realised you had taken a risk. If you take the tablet within 72 hours after you've had unprotected sex, Plan B One-Step can reduce the risk of pregnancy by up to 89%. If you take Plan B One-Step within 24 hours, it is about 95% effective. Plan B can work in two ways which is to actually delay ovulation or interfere with fertilization of an egg. If you have taken the tablet correctly, then there is only a very small chance the pill won't have worked, despite when you think your period is due. I advise you to visit your GP as soon as possible and he/she may encourage you to have a pregnancy test. Your GP will also help prescribe or advise other methods of contraception as the morning after pill should not to be taken frequently and prevention is always better than cure.
Sophi 11/05/2016 at 6:04 pm
I am 14 and had sex with a guy and he thought he might have came inside of me, but he bought me plan b the next day. my period was supposed to come on Monday. we had sex on Saturday. it's Wednesday and my period still hasn't come. I don't have any cramps or any period symptoms. if I am pregnant and want an abortion, would I have to get parents consent?
TeenIssues Editor 10/05/2016 at 12:24 pm
It is difficult to estimate as a woman can still become pregnant even if a man does not ejaculate during intercourse. The chances are less than if a man ejaculates, but there is still a possibility pregnancy can occur.

My girlfriend (14) and I (15 -few months difference) had unprotected about 3 weeks back. I did not ejaculate in, on or even near her, although I cannot be 100% sure that no "pre-cum" went in (and I ejaculated earlier that day, and did not urinate post ejaculation). She is almost 2 weeks late on her period, and we are both feeling scared, stupid and stressed!! We cannot get our hands on a pregnancy test... Please help us, please reply!??!!?
TeenIssues Editor 11/04/2016 at 10:59 am
It is highly unlikely she could get pregnant this way and the risk is very low. In order to get pregnant, the semen would have to be plentiful and wet.
TeenIssues Editor 01/04/2016 at 12:54 pm
I don't think you have very much to worry about here. It is highly unlikely your ex can be pregnant if no intercourse took place and she has had her period.
TeenIssues Editor 31/03/2016 at 3:08 pm
I'm afraid the only advice I can offer is to have a pregnancy test. Sometimes it is easier than continuing to fret. However, condoms if used properly are 98% effective, so if you have checked, it may be just a case of your period being late, or missed, which occasionally they are.

Me and my boyfriend had sex twice about a week ago. We used protection and we checked each one before and after. Before, their were no tears and the condom was in date. This was for both. Afterwards, their were still no tears and this was for both. But my period is late. There are the signs that it's coming but I'm extremely late and am worried that the condom may have split and I haven't noticed. Any advice?

TeenIssues Editor 23/03/2016 at 2:18 pm
Women are generally at their least fertile just before menstruation, during menstruation, and just after menstruation. However, it is still possible to fall pregnant at any time of the month. Therefore you perhaps you should ask fo a pregnancy test from your GP, and if you think you may be having sex again, then you will need to talk about the right form of contraception for you as it is very risky to take such chances.

If in doubt you can always have a pregnancy test. If you took the morning after pill, it may make your periods irregular, so I would not worry there. I suggest you make and appointment to visit your GP and ask for a test while also asking for advice on the best form of contraception for you, if you intend having sex again.

I lost my virginity exactly a month ago but I was on my period and the next day I took morning after but I then got a water infection but experience bleeding wasn't sure if it was because of the pill or another period and I'm late by a few days going off my last period but the clinic where I got the morning after pill said that when I had unprotected sex that I wasn't at my most fertile stage so not sure what to do
TeenIssues Editor 03/03/2016 at 10:08 am
If your partner has used a condom , then it is unlikley you will be pregnant as condoms—when used correctly and consistently—prevent pregnancy about 98 percent of the time. However, if you are unsure, you can always have a pregnancy test. If you have told your mother, then hopefully she will have advised you to perhaps see the doctor for contraception. Please see NHS link herefor more advice.

It is unlikely that she will be pregnant if you have not penetrated fully or ejaculated inside her. However, if in the future you are considering having sex, then you need to discuss with your girlfriend what form of protection you should use.

As one of the previous comments - a under-16 female can have an abortion without telling her parents if two doctors believe it's in her best interests and as the article specifies she understands what is involved and she meets the Fraser Guidelines. However, it she will be encouraged to tell her parents, as according to the NHS it increases the amount of support she will have available. Please see NHS whichI hope this helps.

The morning after pill is designed to bring on a period (and hopefully flush out any egg/sperm). The duration and amount of bleeding is different for everybody and depends where about you are within your monthly cycle. I should not worry, if taken within the correct time frame, which you have, it is very reliable. However, it should not be seen as a convenient form of contraception as it bombards your body with a mass of hormones. You should speak with your GP about regular contraception if you are to continue having sex.
emily 22/12/2015 at 12:26 am
I had sex yesterday and we used a condom but first time round it split. I think it split when he pulled out and then we stopped. However I felt paranoid and went to the hospital and took a morning after pill within 24 hours of it. Only several hours after the pill I noticed spotting. I am probably overthinking it but now I am really worried if I am pregnant and the pill didn't work or if the spotting is a side effect from the pill? I have got the spotting the day after having sex- is it from the pill or is it pregnancy? If I was pregnant would spotting occur so quickly?
I am really worried please respond!

TeenIssues Editor 18/12/2015 at 10:07 am
Your girlfriend may wish to visit her GP to request contraception. She can do this without parental consent. In the meantime, if you are considering having sex again, then you can get free condoms from contraception clinics, sexual health clinics and some GP surgeries. Condoms, if used 'correctly' every time you have sex are 98% effective. However, if you are concerned she may be pregnant, then she can also request a pregnancy test via her GP, or sexual health clinic. I hope this helps.

I assume your parents may have different views because they have foresight into the realities of bringing up children and are only thinking of you and your future. However, you are also old enough to make your own decision regarding whether you wish to keep your child. There are several Pregnancy Choices Centres dotted about the UK that can offer information advice and support for people facing unplanned pregnancy or post abortion concerns, whichIt may be advisable for you to speak to someone about your concerns directly, which may help you make your decision. I hope this helps.

Can a 15 year old get an abortion without the parents being aware
Lucky_loo 04/12/2015 at 4:05 pm
I'm 17, about 10 weeks pregnant. My boyfriend and parents want me to have an abortion but I don't feel like I can. They say they will support me either way but when I talk to them they just seem to try to persuade me to get rid of it. I genuinely don't want to. I think I could cope, I would get help with money if I was ever in desperate need and I could still finish college because it has a cresh. But I feel like I would be disappointing my family if I kept it because they don't want me to.

TeenIssues Editor 10/11/2015 at 12:14 pm
You're most fertile when an egg is released from your ovaries (ovulation) which is around 12 -14 days before your period starts. However, there are exceptions to this. If your partner didn't ejaculate inside of you, this reduces the chances of becoming pregnant (however, this also does not mean you can't get pregnant through this method either). This is why you would need to seek birth control. In the first instance you would need to make an appointment with your GP to have a pregnancy test, and ask for contraception and advice which will help you avoid these periods of panic in the future.

My boyfriend has left me and my family tried to force me to have an abortion.
I couldn't and won't do it. I couldn't bear the thought of terminating my baby when I seen my baby fully formed.

If you are being forced to have an abortion then it is wrong at all levels!!! Peace x

I have an abortion booked for Friday. I don't want one and neither does the father. However, he is much younger than me & in his teens. His parents are forcing me into abortion to the point that I've been threatened and fear for my safety if I don't go ahead with it. Calling the police seems pointless as the family are not the type to take notice. I'm so upset and there seems there is no one to help me.

me and my boyfriend had sex for the first time 7 days ago, more than once and we used condoms each time. my last period was in early august and i should have been due on this week but i'm often irregular so i'm not sure, although i've experienced other signs such as short shooting pains through my breasts/nipples and more frequent urinating (with stinging pains during and afterwards). we're both 16 and our parents don't know we were together that night and can't know about me possibly being pregnant, we both just started at college and he thinks if i'm pregnant i should get an abortion.. i'm undecided because i know this is an important time of my life that i'd like to focus on and both of our parents would be so angry, but at the same time i'm not sure if i want to go through with an abortion, what can i do?
hello 06/09/2015 at 6:22 am
my boyfriend and I had sex unprotected and he pulled out but pre-ejaculate could contain alive sperm, and I have a couple signs, like sore boobs, but my period was supposed to come so I don't know if that's why my boobs are sore. my period hasn't come yet but it's always late/irregular.
TeenIssues Editor 02/09/2015 at 10:50 am
In the first instance, she should really visit her GP if she is experiencing abdominal pain, as any preganancy should not cause this. Her doctor may also give her a pregnancy test, which will answer your question and inform whether she is pregnant or not. You can also buy over-the-counter tests. I'm afraid I cannot advice on whether your fiances would cover a termination as we are a UK-based site and therefore can only advise on UK-based issues. However, before you start worrying uneccesarily, I suggest you perhaps speak to her parents who will help her get the test done and abdominal pain seen to first.
Griff 01/09/2015 at 2:51 am
My girlfriend might be pregnant she's having no period but abdominal pain!! No other signs but that, and we are considering abortion, her parents know but my father cannot. I have 400$ to pay for the abortion and IF SHE IS pregnant, she will be about 2 weeks and will 400$ work? I don't think she really is because we had unprotected sex but the issue is precum. PLEASE RESPOND

I am 15 and my boyfriend is 16 years old
3 weeks back me and him had a lot of unprotected sex
And I seem to be getting lots of early signs of pregnancy
I am going to take a pregnancy test at the end of the week but if it comes out positive I want to keep it but he wants me to have a abortion because my mum told me it could effect him getting a job but I don't know if that true?

Today i experienced brown discharge... I searched up the causes for this and i came across 'early pregnancy/implantation bleeding'. I have no idea who to call about it. - my parents dont know. I am 14 and 15 in november,
TeenIssues Editor 27/07/2015 at 1:45 pm
@sara122 - you really need to make an appointment with your GP asap in order to get advice on the best way forward.

Im 14 and I am pregnant, I had sex with my boyfriend about 3 weeks ago, I done 4 tests and all came back positive. How do I go about getting an abortion without my parents finding out, my mums made it clear that she would disown me if I got pregnant at this age therefore she can NOT know! would I need to book an appointment with my GP and go from there or...?

NEED AN ANSWER ASAP!

I'm 17 years old, I had two sexual partners within a week I have spoke to both about the possibility they could become patents and have been told its not theirs by both of them. I am not 100% sure if I am pregnant or not as I don't have regular periods. An abortion sounds like the best option as a dancer and gym freak I'm not ready to become a mother as I have anorexia and have overdosed I cant tell my dad it would break his heart, is it possible for me to have an abortion without them been informed.
Thanks un advance.
TeenIssues Editor 15/07/2015 at 2:52 pm
@Pw - you should make an appointment see a GP, in order to have a pregnancy test. You can also get help and advice via the Brook linkhere. I hope this helps.

TeenIssues Editor 07/07/2015 at 1:41 pm
@Miss - Yes, you can actually have a termination if you are under 16 without parental consent, as long as two doctors believe it's in your best interests. Please see NHS whichI hope this helps.
Miss 04/07/2015 at 9:42 pm
Can you get an abortion without parental consent at 17 in England ?
TeenIssues Editor 02/07/2015 at 11:04 am
@ProblemedTeen - you will need to have a pregnancy test asap. You can do this confidentially through your GP, or local walk-in health centre. I have included a link to Childline here which should also help and where you can talk to someone directly and confidentially.
ProblemedTeen 29/06/2015 at 1:39 pm
I'm 16 years old and I had sex with a friend.. We aren't dating, but we are very close friends, and it just happened. I'm starting to get paranoid and worried, because usually my period is about a week late. But I am now at the one month mark, and I'm not getting any menstrual cramps or signs that my period is soon. My parents would be outraged if they found out I was pregnant. If I am, would there be any way I could get an abortion of some sort?
Chlo 24/06/2015 at 11:11 pm
I'm 15 and pregnant, my boyfriends 17 but we've been together for 2 years, he wants a baby but not now, I want an abortion as I have exams and things to worry about first, I'm completely against abortion I've always hated it, I understand all the risks and things, will they let me have it? I'm scared they're tell my mum
TeenIssues Editor 09/06/2015 at 2:17 pm
@Teen - you would not need consent at age 17 either. I hope this helps.
Teen 08/06/2015 at 1:23 am
It says if your under 16 you don't need consent... What if you're 17? Do you need consent from a parent for an abortion?
TeenIssues Editor 03/06/2015 at 9:50 am
@anonymous - It may not be 'implantation bleeding', there could be various reasons for your bleed. However, you will still need to do a pregnancy test. Please see NHS link: 'Where can I get a Pregnancy Test', here. You can get a pregnancy test from your GP or local health centre without your parents knowing. I hope this helps.
anonymous 31/05/2015 at 12:30 am
I am 14, and had sex 6 days ago, last night I had bled and then stopped an hour later, I had searched it and it is implantation bleeding, if I am pregnant, I want an abortion, can I do this anonymously without my parents knowing?

I'm 16 and I think I may be pregnant. I am on the pill and this week is supposed to be my week off to have my period, which has not come yet? My boyfriend is fully supportive but his mom is against abortion completely, but we have such a close relationship. I do not want a child until I'm much older. I CANNOT tell my parents. What can I do?

@dene - Before you make any concrete decisions about running away, I suggest you give Family Lives a call via whichYou can speak to someone in confidence who can give you some advice on what your options are. You must be feeling very confused currently, so it may help you to speak to someone who can answer all your questions and help give you some practical direction. I hope this helps.

@Janey - If she is under 16 years of age, she can have an abortion without telling her parents, as long as two doctors believe it's in her best interests and she fully understands what is involved. See NHS Choices whichI hope this helps.
Janey 19/04/2015 at 5:02 pm
My daughter's friend (age 14) is pregnant (a few weeks, she's not sure how many) and social services are involved and have told her she has to tell her parents and can't have an abortion without them knowing. She is very frightened and doesn't know what to do, reading various articles online I've read that a girl under 16 can have an abortion without her parents knowing, any advice you could offer me would be great and I'm concerned about time passing by which isn't a good thing if the young girl doesn't want to keep it.
TeenIssues Editor 17/04/2015 at 11:09 am
@kay - I would not worry, irregular and intermittent bleeding may happen after a termination. It may take a little time for your body to get back into sync.
kay 16/04/2015 at 11:42 pm
I had an abortion on the 18 of march n I haven't gone on my periods, I'm freaking out I think I might still be pregnant is it possible that I am
Sal Editor 15/04/2015 at 9:33 am
@neha - of course you will be able to, there is no reason why not, most people who have terminations go on to have several children without any problems.
neha 12/04/2015 at 5:05 am
i m nw 19 old girl quite simple too.. i had my abortion at the age of 15.. i wnt to knw whether can i be a mother again in my life????. plz help me ... i wnt to knw...
TeenIssues Editor 10/04/2015 at 10:41 am
@neha - As specified in the article abortions are safe, legal medical procedures. The the majority of women who have terminations go on to give birth to healthy children.

I'm 14 and think iim pregnant i kind of had sex with my boyfriend without a condom in March. I haven't been on my period this month but in February I was on my period 3 times. I can't talk to anybody in my family because they wouldn't want to know me and ii will hurt them badly. I'm scared and don't know what to do. If i am pregnant I CANNOT have the baby, I have no choice. Help me please.
TeenIssues Editor 03/03/2015 at 3:17 pm
@Lilah - Unless you have had penetrative sex, it is unlikely you will be pregnant. However, you can get an appointment with your GP, or go to your nearest Family Planning Centre or hospital walk-in centre in order to get a pregnancy test if you are worried and think you may be pregnant. I hope this helps.
Lilah 01/03/2015 at 3:24 pm
14 and not sure what to do. The last time I got my period was the last week going into the first couple days of february and it's already the end of the month and haven't got it again. My boyfriend had fingered me but he still had cum on him. I've been having cramps and feeling nausea.. I can't tell my parents that I'm pregnant because they wouldn't want anything to do with me. Is there anything I could do without a parent permission?
TeenIssues Editor 02/03/2015 at 2:39 pm
@annu - you probably need to talk to someone directly about this in order to help you make an informed decision about the best way forward. You could try the Family Lives helpline via whichI hope this helps.

TeenIssues Editor 04/02/2015 at 11:28 am
@aim97 - thank you for sharing this information with us. Yes, some young women think it may not be easy to get pregnant, especially if they have not been previously caught out, but overalll about 85 percent of all couples will get pregnant within a year. I hope things work out for you.
TeenIssues Editor 13/10/2014 at 11:19 am
@chels. I feel for you and the worry you are currently going through. But please don't panic as there is help out there. You first of all need to have a preganancy test. I suggest you visit your local Brook Advisory Centre where they will do all they can to help and advise, and the service is free and confidential. You can look online and it will tell you where your nearest centre is, or give you an alternative if there is not one close to you. You can also visit your GP or your local Out of Hours Walk-In service at your local hospital.

Many women can have irregular periods, so just because you are a few days late, it doesn't naturally mean you are pregnant. But you need to have a test first to find out and then take it from there.

I found out yesterday my 14yr old daughter is pregnant by her soon to be 17 yr old boyfriend. Through naivety they are not going to abort as they dont want to kill 'a living baby'. Firstly can you tell me when the group of cells form to make a baby, secondly they live in Northern Ireland and what are the 'Abortion regulations there? Answers asap please as time is of the essence. Thank you in advance.
They both have such bright futures ahead of them and I just want to be able to support them and give the best advice possible. At their ages I dont think its the best option to keep the 'baby' but want them to be armed with all the facts before cetain options are no longer viable.

@mich, you should really speak to a professional about your abortion as only they can say what is best for you. As you are 7 weeks along though, you would more than likely be advised to have a vacuum aspiration abortion - which is explained in the article. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi. My daughter has just turned 15 & is 16 Weeks pregnant. She's booked in for termination & the clinic said I could stay with her for the first part of the treatment up until she goes for anaesthetic. She has Hypermobility syndrome & pain has worsened with pregnancy. The clinic phoned to say that there's been a change & now expect her to be alone, except nursing staff whom she's never met & won't want to speak to. She wants me there but the clinic say its not fair on other women. Are there any laws i.e disability discrimination I can quote to ensure that she is supported? I've told them about how her condition means she feels pain more than those without this & feel she must be able to have me there as she wants to as she's a minor? There's no information available any where regarding girls who want a Mum there, only information for girls who don't. We asked the Dr for a referral elsewhere but the delay would prolong her suffering.
Geo97 16/04/2012 at 11:28 pm
I'm 14 years of age, I had to go through with an abortion on the 18th January 2012. I found out and got refered to an abortion clinic via Centeral youth. They didn't tell my mum or dad so nobody ever found out I went through it all alone with my closest friends to help, I had to arrange a taxi though both ways so I had travelled safe etc as I chose to go for the suction method, I was 12 weeks and I was put to sleep during it as I didnt want to know it was happening: I didn't want an abortion but it was my only choice. I coped with it well with the help of my friends but now 3 months later it's hitting me hard, I feel guilty and my emotions are running higher I'm getting more depressed. It's a horrible thing which haunts and stays by you forever, think before you act because I wouldn't want anybody experiencing the upset and hurt me and many other women/girls have had to go through.

I'm 20 years old and I've just completed my abortion. I tell you it feels like I just came from my own horror movieNow I feel bad that I aborted my twins that could have beenMy soul and every reason to live for. My parents don't know that I had the abortion right under their roof but I guess its a secret I'm taking to the grave.

Hi, I'm 16 and have found myself pregnant. I'm not originally from the UK but have lived here without my parents for the past 7 years, I have recently found myself pregnant, can I just go to a clinic or do I have to go to a GP first?
TeenIssues 06/07/2011 at 2:36 pm
You don't have to tell your mum (or anyone for that matter) but is there another adult that you trust enough to confide in? Make an appointment with your GP or local family planning clinic who will be able to offer advice and guidance.

im 13 years old and just found out i am pregnant, i dont know what to do and cannot tell my mum but want to get an abortion, can you give me some advice?
yeah 23/05/2011 at 5:45 pm
Hi, Hmm, instead of worrying yourself with the 'what ifs', you should take a pregnancy test, if you have not came on your period already. Only after you have determined whether you are actually pregnant or not first can you think of your options. Best of luck X
